WHAT IS MASSAGE THERAPY?

Massage Therapy is the assessment of soft tissues and joints of the body and the treatment or prevention of physical dysfunction and pain by manipulation to develop, maintain, rehabilitate or augment physical function and/or relieve pain. It can be more briefly defined as the manipulation of soft tissues and joints for therapeutic purposes.

Massage can relieve pain caused by tension or injury by gently stretching tissue and breaking up scar tissue or adhesions. Through a variety of techniques, the therapist manipulates the muscles in order to restore length and proper function, and to speed the venous return of blood to the heart from the extremities.

The increase in muscle length allows for greater flexibility and improved range of motion in the joints, and decreased pain and dysfunction. The increase in circulation speeds the removal of metabolic wastes such as lactic acid and uric acid, and allows nutrients and oxygen to reach the tissue and cells.

Massage also greatly reduces tension and stress by stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system, which opposes the 'fight or flight' reaction that many people encounter throughout the day. By stimulating these nerves, the body automatically releases tension as the heart rate decreases, and respiration increases bringing the body into a deep state of relaxation. Regular massage therapy is generally recommended as a form of stress management.

WHAT WE TREAT

Massage therapy melts away stress and tension, relieving associated headaches and muscular aches & pains. By encouraging the body's own healing processes to act, massage therapy, reduces injury healing time. Massage therapy aids in the healing process from injury or over-use, and is an excellent form of preventive health care.

It can aid in increasing energy, enhancing your self image, increasing relaxation and reducing anxiety. It can also strengthen the immune system, decrease blood pressure, and improve digestion and circulation.
